HRMC Participates in A Day in the Life of a Nurse

Initially developed by the Nursing Shortage Consortium of South Florida, “A Day in the Life of a Nurse” program was implemented to eliminate the nursing shortage in South Florida. A total of 50 students, who expressed interest in the nursing profession, came from LaBelle, Moore Haven and Clewiston High Schools to participate in the shadowing program held at Hendry Regional Medical Center on November 16th.
David McClusky (Clinical Education Assistant) coordinated the events of the day, along Sharon Murphy (OR Nurse Manager) who also welcomed the group. In addition to touring the hospital, the students learned about nursing through some thought-provoking question and answer sessions, video presentations, and speakers from the nursing staff of HRMC, Hendry County Health Department and the School Board.
Participants were also informed about the recruitment and retention problems that hospitals are dealing with today and were provided information regarding the Scholarship Program offered by Hendry Regional Medical Center. Sharon Murphy told the group that she actually began her career at this hospital through the assistance of the Scholarship Program back in 1990.
Initially, the students were asked to complete a pre-assessment form regarding their current knowledge of nursing. Then at the end of the day, the students were asked to complete a post-assessment to see how their knowledge had changed. Based on their new found understanding, many of the participants found they had developed a renewed desire for the nursing field.
In wrapping up A Day in The Life of a Nurse, David McClusky and Sharon Murphy shared a common goal – to leave the students with a message that nursing is dynamic, exciting, vital and rewarding.
