 When was the last time you saw someone drink a cup of water (hands-behind-back) chew gum and blow a bubble, hula hoop-three times, and race a team of four in flippers, while pushing someone on a bed? If you attended this year’s Sugar Festival and watched the Foundation Hospital Bed Races, I’m sure you were thoroughly entertained!
There were eight participating teams in the Hospital Bed Races: The National Honor Society, Sunrise Restaurant, First Bank of Clewiston, Hendry Regional’s Emergency Room, along with another HRMC ER team, Students agains Drunk Drivers (S.A.D.D.) and two Clewiston High School Softball teams.
To make the festivities even more amusing, the teams were judged for their overall costumes, which ranged from animal attire (Sunrise Restaurant) to softball uniforms (Clewiston High School softball team). The First Bank Bandits were voted as having the best overall costumes, with their bank robber gear and “stolen money” scattered on their bed. The fastest team of this year’s race was HRMC, which won in a mere 56 seconds.
The HRMC Foundation raised a total of $400.00, as a result of the Bed Races. The Foundation board members Robbie Castellanos, Carl Berner, Christine Howell, Tom Conner, Miller Couse, Dr. James Forbes, , Sylvester Humphrey, Wendell Johnson, Karl Larsen, Melisa Martinez, Tommy Perry, Morris Ridgdill, Chris Shupe, Dr. Valiant, Sassy Whitehead, and Sandy Woodall would like to thank everyone for their participation and support.
