Hendry- Glades Health and Safety Fair Saves Lives
The Hendry-Glades Community Health Fair took place at Hendry Regional Medical Center on Sunday, February 17th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each year, over five hundred individuals attend the fair, and the majority receives free healthcare screenings. Kids enjoy the bounce house, clown, snow cones and other free goodies. Adults take advantage of the educational exhibits, free blood pressure checks, glucose, cholesterol, and bone density screenings, and many other free healthcare services. Many people go home with new awareness’s of health issues that need physician referral follow-ups.
What the community may not realize is that is every year, someone’s life is saved during this event. On Sunday, two individuals had to be taken to the hospital emergency room as results of their tests proved to be life-threatening. Mrs. Geake, wife of Dr. John Geake, who practices at River Side Glades Medical Center in Moore Haven, said, “If we can save just one life, all the hard work and preparation is worth it.” In reality, more than two lives may have been saved on Sunday because of potential medical problems that were identified on that day. The hope of the Health Fair committee is that this annual fair will continue to grow, with increased attendance so that more and more lives will be saved.
