Hendry Regional helps detect Pulmonary Disease

Hendry Regional Medical Center has purchased a new pulmonary function machine. This state-of-the-art equipment (VMAX Encore 22, manufactured by Viasys) is now on site and ready for diagnostic testing for patients who may have obstructed or restricted pulmonary disease such as COPD.

What Is COPD? COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is a progressive and serious lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. Three of the major diseases that may be grouped together as COPD are asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. In chronic bronchitis and emphysema, there is obstruction of the flow of air through the airways and out of the lungs, and the obstruction generally is permanent and progressive over time. With asthma, unlike chronic bronchitis and emphysema, the obstruction is usually reversible. Between attacks of asthma, the flow of air through the airways is typically good.

COPD can cause coughing (that produces large amounts of mucus), wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Most people who have COPD are smokers or have been smokers. Exposure to heavy amounts of second-hand smoke and pollution is also a risk factor for COPD. Additionally, long-term exposure to other lung irritants, such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or dust, may contribute to COPD.

COPD is a major cause of disability, and it is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. More than 12 million people are currently diagnosed with COPD, and an additional 12 million likely have the disease and don't even know it.

Although COPD has no cure yet, it is not a death sentence. You can't undo the damage to your lungs, but you can take steps to prevent more damage and to feel better. The most important factors contributing to a longer and healthier lifestyle include, but are not limited to:

  • Getting early detection
  • Finding a physician who is proactive in disease management, preferably a pulmonary specialist
  • Following your medical treatment
  • Eating healthy
  • Stopping your smoking habitsh
  • Following an exercise program, approved by your physician
  • Educating yourself about the disease
