Local High School Students Experience a “Day in the Life of a Nurse”
On Friday, November 13th, 50 students from Clewiston and Moore Haven High Schools looked beyond graduation and into a career of nursing, when they participated in a “Day in the Life of a Nurse,” a nursing interaction and observation program held each year at Hendry Regional Medical Center.
 David McClusky, education assistant, coordinated the day’s activities with a goal to inspire students to pursue a nursing career and provide them with a glimpse of important and varied tasks that nurses perform. Pam Redondo, the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer, kicked off the event as the first speaker of the day. Other Hendry Regional registered nurses who presented to the group included Sharon Murphy (Infection Control and OR Manager), Cynthia Drapal (Emergency Room and CCU Manager), and Joe Horn (Medical/Surgical Manager and Patient Safety Officer).
Nursing recruiters, Dr. Susan Holland (from Edison State College) and Dr. Carol Alexander (from Palm Beach State College) also took part in the program and encouraged the students to steer towards a career in nursing, as they provided them with the why’s, when’s and how’s of the profession.
One of the day’s highlights was the landing of the Aeromed helicopter (based in LaBelle) from Tampa General Hospital and a presentation provided by its flight nurse, Dan Kresge, RN EMT Paramedic.
All “Day in the Life of a Nurse” participants were provided with scholarship packages, and some even revealed that the day’s experience had helped to seal their decisions in moving forward with their interests in the nursing industry. At the end of the day, the high school students left with a new understanding and knowledge of the nursing field. |
